Ryde: coach of Romania

The Swedish coach has been appointed for the EURO 2008.

It happens for the first time ever in Romania: the women’s national team will be coached by a foreign coach, the Swedish Tomas Ryde.

The Romanian Federation didn’t renew the contract of Gheorghe Tadici, who led the team to a disappointing 7th place in Beijing. After a 7-hour meeting, the Council of Administration of the Romanian Federation decided to give a chance to Ryde. The surprising candidate was proposed by President Cristian Gatu.
The decision was taken by vote, 9 out of the 13 Council members were backing the change. Ryde received a short term contract, valid for 3 months, until the end of the European Championship in FYR of Macedonia.

The former national coach, Tadici, was upset about the decision: “I have beaten Ryde twice last season when Oltchim played against Viborg in the Champions League. I think he is not good enough for the national team,” Tadici said angrily.

Good enough or not, Tomas Ryde gladly accepted his new job: “My objective is to win a medal at the European Championships,” the Swedish said.
Tomas Ryde won Champions League with Viborg in 2006, but he stepped down two years before the expiry of his contract due to personal reasons. He will now return to Denmark in October, this time to lead Romania at the most important friendly tournament, the World Cup in Aarhus.
